CHARLOTTE JOHNSTONE

Biography  |  Work  |   Soane

Charlotte comes from a family of distinguished and celebrated artists, illustrators and set designers. Her grandmother Doris Zinkeisen’s work is represented in the National Portrait Gallery and the Imperial War Museum. Born in England, Charlotte studied Fine Art at the Slade School, London. Having lived in India for a decade she now lives and works back in Suffolk, close to her family’s artistic roots.

As a highly accomplished portrait painter, Charlotte is equally skilful at painting individuals and family groups.  She loves the less observed sides of people’s personalities, the sides that haven’t been prepared for an audience.  With children, she finds the fleetingness of youth and the inhabitance of the present; with adults, stories behind the eyes. She works from life and photographs.

Passionate about the natural world, Charlotte was Artist in Residence for the Royal Geographical Society’s Shoals of Capricorn Expedition (1997-2001).   She is now exploring her love of landscape alongside portraiture.
