Charlotte Johnstone

Charlotte comes from a family of painters. Her grandmother was Doris Zinkeisen, the celebrated painter, costume and set designer. Born in England, Charlotte studied Fine Art at the Slade School, London. She now lives and works in India but spends each summer in Europe.

Charlotte was Artist in Residence for the Royal Geographical Society's Shoals of Capricorn Expedition (1997-2001). Time spent in the Indian Ocean with the RGS produced a series of glossy and colourful underwater paintings but since then she has returned to her first love, portraiture.

Charlotte loves the less observed sides of people's personalities, the sides that haven't been prepared for an audience. With children, she finds the fleetingness of youth and the inhabitance of the present; with adults, stories behind the eyes. She works from life and photographs.
